Honda SSM EP3In 2006 Ryan P. purchased his 2002 Honda Civic SI hatchback, and thus began the fun!  Most people want to get the most bang for our buck, yet are not willing to do what it takes.  Ryan completed the easiest "mod" you can do and costs him absolutely nothing.  So, why then are people not willing to do what Ryan did?

At this point you're still probably wondering what it was that cost him nothing?  It was gutting the rear and removing the sound barrier.  By gutting his Civic, the car lost close to 250 lbs.  Power to weight ratio means everything.  By removing your spare tire, alone, you get rid of 25 lbs of dead weight, increase your power to weight ratio and of course better gas mileage.  Supposedly, Ryan's girlfriend was happy when he lost his spare tire.  Whatever that means...

The car is putting out 315 whp @ 8 psi of boost and originally sat on the curb at 2,420 lbs and Ryan's now sits at 2,170 lbs.  That's a power to weight ratio of 1:6.9 or 1 HP for every 6.9 lbs of weight. (.145 hp/lb )  That puts this humble Civic in some pretty good company:
  • Ferrari Koenig 360 Modena - .174 hp/lb
  • Honda Civic SSM EP3 - .145 hp/lb
  • Lamborghini Countach - .139 hp/lb
Now, will Ryan get the respect on the road that a Ferrari or Lamborghini harbor? No. But he sure could embarrass a few Ferrari and Lambo owners in a friendly race.

Ryan got involved in the import performance arena when in 1999 his brother did a B series swap and he became hooked like junkie.  Ryan has even bigger plans for the SSM EP3.  He plans on building the engine internals and hopefully we'll see Ryan able to run some more boost and up his power to weight ratio even more.
